The Coorong is a 'Ramsar' wetland of international significance playing host to 12 species of international migratory birds and is the largest breeding habitat for the Australian Pelican.
Approximately 85 species of waterbirds have been recorded in the region including Pelicans, Spoonbill, Swamphen, Parrots, Sandpipers, Greenshank, Plovers, Dotterels, Ducks, Swan, Cape Barren Geese and Ibis.
The Coorong provides invaluable habitat and feeding sites for birds that have travelled from China, Japan and Siberia.
Red-necked Stints are one of a number of shore birds that migrate annually to Australia during summer. They are tiny birds that migrate from breeding grounds in the Arctic, approximately 20,000km for a round trip. The Arctic summers are short but the days are long. The sun hardly sets during the 6 week summer which means the birds can feed 24 hours a day. Once the chicks are grown up they all leave before the snow and ice sets in. On their way to Australia they stop off along the coast of China or Japan, sometimes Thailand or an Indonesian Island. The route they travel is called the East Asian-Australasian Flyway.
